Restoration of artistic and cultural heritage

It is a highly specialized activity that requires a deep knowledge of chemistry, materials and artistic techniques, as well as cultural and historical sensitivity:

The restoration of artistic heritage is a set of technical and sometimes scientific interventions aimed at preserving, recovering and enhancing works of art of all kinds: paintings, sculptures, prints and any object that has a cultural, historical or artistic value. The main objective of restoration is to preserve the artistic asset, respecting its historical and material integrity.

Main objectives of restoration:

  1. Conservation: Prevent degradation and deterioration of the constituent materials of the work.
  2. Recovery: Restore, as far as possible, the original appearance of the work without altering its authenticity.
  3. Documentation: Record all information relating to the intervention for future analysis and interventions.

Fundamental principles of restoration:

  1. Reversibility: The materials and techniques used must be able to be removed without causing damage.
  2. Minimum intervention: Act as little as possible, respecting the integrity of the work.
  3. Respect for authenticity: Avoid additions or modifications that could distort the original appearance or meaning of the work.

Types of interventions:

  1. Conservative restoration: Focuses on stabilizing materials and preventing degradation (e.g. consolidation of a canvas, protection of painted surfaces).
  2. Aesthetic restoration: Aims to improve the appearance of the work, intervening on gaps, altered colors or missing elements (e.g. pictorial reintegration).
  3. Maintenance: Regular activities to prevent damage (e.g. surface cleaning, humidity control).
